How to find patience when you feel burnt out
Life in North America often feels like a race without a finish line. When your patience runs thin and love feels impossible, here is where to look.
How to find patience when you feel burnt out
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud… It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” (1 Corinthians 13:4, 7)
In our fast-paced North American culture, we are often measured by our productivity and our ability to keep up with an endless schedule. Between the pressures of work, the cultural divide between generations in our immigrant families, and the constant digital noise, it is easy to feel like our emotional reserves are empty. When you are burnt out, being "patient" and "kind" feels less like a virtue and more like a heavy burden you simply cannot carry.
We often read these verses as a checklist for how to be a 'better person.' But if you try to manufacture this kind of love on your own, you will inevitably fail. Paul isn't giving us a set of rules to follow; he is describing the very nature of God. This love is 「long-suffering (μακροθυμέω, makrothymeō)」—a patience that doesn't just wait, but actively endures with a steady, quiet heart.
Your exhaustion is real, and God sees it. You don’t have to pretend to be strong when you are fraying at the edges. When you feel like you have nothing left to give to your family, your coworkers, or your community, remember that you are not the source of this love. You are a vessel. You are invited to stop trying to be the hero and instead lean into the One who loves you with a patience that never runs out.
Today’s Practice: Take five minutes today to sit in silence. Don't ask for anything. Just acknowledge that God’s patience toward you is greater than your current frustration. When you feel the urge to snap at someone or rush through your day, take one deep breath and whisper, “Help me to mirror Your patience.”
A Short Prayer: Lord, my heart feels tired and my patience is thin. I am overwhelmed by the demands of this life. Remind me today that I am held by Your love. Fill me with Your grace so that I might offer a small piece of that same patience to those around me. Amen.
