How to find peace when you feel overwhelmed by life
Life often feels like a constant race. If you are struggling with anxiety and the weight of your responsibilities, learn how to find rest through Lectio Divina.
How to find peace when you feel overwhelmed by life
In our fast-paced North American culture, it is easy to feel like you are constantly running on a treadmill that never stops. Between the demands of work, the complexities of family life, and the quiet pressure to keep it all together, many of us live in a state of low-level anxiety. You might feel like you have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders, constantly proving your worth.
In 1 Peter 5:7, we are given a radical invitation: "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." But how do we actually do that when our minds are racing? We need a practice that moves us from intellectual knowledge to heart-felt trust. This is where the ancient practice of Lectio Divina (Divine Reading) becomes a vital tool for your soul.
The Practice: Lectio Divina
Lectio Divina is not a Bible study method to gain information; it is a way to listen to God. It is a rhythmic practice of slowing down to let the Word of God shape your heart.
Step 1: Statio (The Pause) Before you open your Bible, stop. Take three deep breaths. Acknowledge that you are in the presence of God. You are not just reading a book; you are entering a conversation.
Step 2: Lectio (Reading) Read 1 Peter 5:1-11 slowly. Do not rush to analyze it. Let the words wash over you. Is there a specific phrase that catches your attention? Perhaps it is the reminder that God "cares for you."
Step 3: Meditatio (Reflecting) Chew on that phrase. In the original Greek, the concept of caring involves the word 「care/anxiety (μέριμνα, merimna, anxiety)」. This word represents the distractions and worries that pull our minds in different directions. Reflect on what is pulling you away from peace today. Bring those specific burdens to God.
Step 4: Oratio (Responding) Talk to God about what you read. If you feel overwhelmed, tell Him. If you feel tired, admit it. He is not looking for a polished prayer; He is looking for your honesty.
Step 5: Contemplatio (Resting) Simply sit in silence. You don’t need to say anything else. Just rest in the truth that you are held by the One who created the universe. You are not alone in your struggle.
A New Identity
We are not victims of our circumstances, nor are we machines designed for endless productivity. We are children of a God who invites us to surrender our control. When you practice this, you aren't just reading text; you are aligning your life with the "God of all grace" mentioned in verse 10. He will restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. You can let go of the control you were never meant to hold.
