How to hear God when you feel overwhelmed

Life feels like a burning bush that won't stop consuming your energy. Discover how the ancient practice of Lectio Divina helps you hear God's voice today.

How to hear God when you feel overwhelmed

Life in North America moves at a relentless pace. Between the pressures of work, the complex dynamics of family life, and the quiet struggle of feeling disconnected, many of us feel like Moses in the desert—wandering, weary, and wondering if God is actually speaking into our specific situation.

In Exodus 3, Moses encounters God in a burning bush. He was doing his daily job, tending sheep, when his attention was caught by something extraordinary. God didn't call him from a place of comfort; He called him from the middle of his ordinary, dusty routine.

The Practice: Lectio Divina (Divine Reading)

To hear God today, we don't need a miracle of fire. We need to slow down. Lectio Divina is an ancient, rhythmic way of reading Scripture that moves us from merely scanning words to letting the Word read us. It is not a study session; it is a conversation.

Step 1: Silence (Statio) Stop. Take three deep breaths. Acknowledge that you are tired and that God is already present in your exhaustion. You are not alone; the God who met Moses is the same God sitting with you right now.

Step 2: Read (Lectio) Read Exodus 3:1-6 slowly. Do not rush to analyze. Look for the word or phrase that catches your attention. Is it "I have seen the affliction of my people"? Or "I will be with you"?

Step 3: Meditate (Meditatio) Repeat that phrase in your mind. Let it sink below the surface of your intellect. This is where we encounter the Hebrew word for "to see" or "to perceive"—רָאָה (ra'ah), which implies not just visual sight, but deep, compassionate observation. God sees your anxiety. He perceives your struggle.

Step 4: Pray (Oratio) Speak to God about what you found. If He says He sees you, tell Him where you feel hidden. Be honest. He isn't looking for religious performance; He is looking for your heart.

Step 5: Contemplation (Contemplatio) Simply rest in His presence. You don't need to do anything. You are a child of the Living God, not a machine of production.

A Call to Rest

We are often tempted to define ourselves by our productivity or our ability to "handle" our stress. But you are not a project to be managed; you are a person to be loved. In the midst of your busy schedule, choose to pause. When you feel the weight of your responsibilities, remember that God is the "I AM"—the eternal present. He is with you in your office, your home, and your secret worries.
