How to keep trusting God when life feels uncertain
When life feels overwhelming and your future is unclear, how do you hold onto faith? Discover the ancient practice of Lectio Divina to find peace.
How to keep trusting God when life feels uncertain
We live in a culture of constant noise and immediate results. In North America, our schedules are packed, and our minds are often cluttered with the anxiety of "what’s next." Whether you are a first-generation immigrant navigating cultural gaps or a second-generation professional balancing the pressures of success, you know the weight of uncertainty. You are not alone in this; God sees your exhaustion.
When life feels like a fog, we need more than just quick advice. We need a way to anchor our souls. The ancient practice of Lectio Divina (Divine Reading) is not about studying for a test; it is about dwelling in the presence of God through His Word.
The Practice: Lectio Divina
This practice is a rhythm of slowing down. It is not meditation in the sense of emptying your mind, but rather filling it with the truth of God.
1. Lectio (Read): Choose a passage, such as Hebrews 11:1-12. Read it slowly, aloud if possible. Listen for a word or phrase that catches your attention. In this passage, the core word is faith, or assurance (ὑπόστασις, hypostasis, assurance). It means the "foundation" or "substance"—the reality that supports your hope.
2. Meditatio (Reflect): Read the passage again. Let the word "assurance" sink in. Ask yourself: "What is the foundation of my life right now? Is it my job, my reputation, or the promise of God?" Do not rush. Let the text speak to your current circumstances.
3. Oratio (Respond): Speak to God about what you found. If you feel anxious, tell Him. If you feel weak, ask for His strength. This is not a formal prayer; it is a conversation with a Father who knows your heart better than you do.
4. Contemplatio (Rest): Simply be still. Stop trying to "do" anything. Rest in the assurance that God is the author of your story, just as He was for Abraham and Sarah, who trusted Him even when they were "as good as dead" (Hebrews 11:12).
Living by Faith
Faith is not the absence of fear; it is the presence of a God who is greater than our circumstances. You are not a machine designed to function; you are a child of God designed to trust. When the demands of life press in, remember: your foundation is not your performance. Your foundation is the character of the One who promised.
Take a deep breath. You are safe in His hands.
