Why does God feel so far away when I am anxious?

When life feels overwhelming and God seems silent, you are not alone. Discover how to find hope in the waiting through Jeremiah 29:11-13.

Why does God feel so far away when I am anxious?

It is a quiet, heavy question that many of us carry into our pews on Sunday mornings. You look around, and everyone seems to have it all together. They are smiling, singing, and shaking hands. But inside, you feel a restless anxiety—a nagging sense that God has drifted away or that your prayers are hitting the ceiling and falling back down.

If you have ever felt this, you are not failing in your faith. You are simply human. In our fast-paced North American culture, where we measure success by productivity and clarity, silence from God feels like rejection. We want a roadmap; He gives us a promise.

The Perspective of the Exile

The prophet Jeremiah wrote to people who were far from home. They were living in Babylon, a place that felt foreign, hostile, and exhausting. They were anxious about their future and weary of their current reality. To them, God spoke these words:

*"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart."* (Jeremiah 29:11-13)

Notice the word for "seek" here. In the original language, it is 「to search or inquire with diligence (דָּרַשׁ, darash)」. This isn't a casual glance or a desperate, one-time plea. It is the posture of someone looking for a lost treasure. God isn't hiding from you because He is angry; He is inviting you into a deeper, more intentional relationship where your anxiety is replaced by His presence.

Why the Silence?

Perhaps you are caught between two worlds—the expectations of your family, the pressures of your career, and the quiet longing for a faith that actually feels real. When God feels distant, it is often because we are looking for a *solution* rather than a *relationship*. We want the anxiety to vanish, but God wants to walk through the anxiety with us.

He doesn't promise that the exile will end tomorrow. He promises that He is *with* the exile. Your struggle is not a sign of His absence; it is the very place where He is waiting to be found.

One Thing You Can Do Today

Stop trying to "fix" your prayer life. Instead, be honest. Today, find five minutes of silence—not to ask for anything, but just to sit. Tell God exactly how you feel: "I feel anxious, and I feel like You are far away." That is not a lack of faith; that is the beginning of seeking Him with all your heart.

Your exhaustion is known. Your questions are heard. You are not just a person managing a schedule; you are a person held by the One who holds the future.
