What to do when you feel lost and anxious
Life feels overwhelming and the path ahead is unclear. When anxiety takes hold, remember Jesus' promise of a place prepared for you. You are not alone.
The alarm clock rings at 6:00 AM, and before your feet even touch the floor, your mind is already racing. There is the presentation due on Thursday, the tension in your relationship with your parents, and that lingering sense that no matter how much you do, it isn’t enough. In the fast-paced culture of North America, we are often defined by our productivity. When we can’t keep up, we feel lost.
In John 14, Jesus speaks to a group of disciples who are feeling exactly this kind of uncertainty. They are anxious because the leader they trusted is leaving. Their world is shifting, and they don’t know what comes next. Jesus doesn’t offer them a quick fix or a productivity hack. Instead, He says, "Do not let your hearts be troubled."
He tells them, "I am going there to prepare a place for you." The word He uses for this "place" is 「dwelling place (μονή, monē)」. It isn’t just a temporary stop or a hotel room; it signifies a permanent, secure home where you are fully known and fully loved.
For many of us, especially those navigating the gap between different cultures or the weight of high expectations, the feeling of not "belonging" is common. We work hard to build a place for ourselves in this world, but the foundation often feels shaky. Jesus invites us to realize that our ultimate security isn't found in our achievements or our status. It is found in the fact that He has already secured a place for us in the Father’s house.
When you feel like you’ve lost your way, remember the words of verse 6: "I am the way and the truth and the life." You don't have to figure out the entire map of your life today. You only need to follow the One who is the Way. You are not defined by your anxiety or your confusion. You are a person held by the One who calls Himself your home.
One sentence to hold onto today: Because Jesus has prepared a place for you, you do not have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders today.
