How to find peace when life feels overwhelming
Read: Matthew 5:1-12
"Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: 'Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven...'" (Matthew 5:1-3)
In our fast-paced North American culture, we are often taught that happiness is the result of achievement, status, or having everything under control. We juggle the pressures of work, family expectations, and the quiet, nagging anxiety that we aren't doing enough. Perhaps you feel this tension between your faith and the relentless demand of your schedule. When you are exhausted, the idea of being "blessed" feels like a distant, unreachable concept.
But notice where Jesus begins. He doesn't start with a list of tasks or a demand for perfection. He starts with the "poor in spirit." This is not a description of financial status, but a recognition of our inner emptiness. It is the humble admission that we cannot sustain our own lives on our own strength. The word here is 「poverty/destitution (πτωχός, ptōchos, destitution)」. It describes someone who has come to the end of their own resources and must rely entirely on God.
Your exhaustion is not a sign of failure; it is an invitation. When you stop trying to project strength and admit your need, you are exactly where the kingdom of heaven begins. God is not looking for your polished performance; He is looking for your open, empty hands. You are not defined by your productivity, but by your position as a beloved child who is invited to rest in His presence.
Today’s Practice: Take three minutes today to sit in silence. Before you rush to the next task, whisper this: "I am poor in spirit, and I am held by the King of Heaven." Give yourself permission to let go of one thing that is draining your peace today.
Prayer: Lord, I am tired of trying to carry everything on my own. I admit my need for You today. Fill my emptiness with Your grace and remind me that I am already Yours. Amen.
