What should I do when I feel anxious about the future?
Life in North America feels like a constant race. If you are feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, discover how to find a peace that defies your circumstances.
What should I do when I feel anxious about the future?
Living in North America, the pressure to keep up is relentless. Whether you are a first-generation immigrant navigating cultural shifts or a second-generation professional trying to balance expectations, the weight of the future often feels crushing. You aren't alone in this; that nagging sense of 'what if' is a common companion for many sitting in the pews today.
It is entirely reasonable to feel this way. We live in a culture that measures worth by productivity and stability, and when those feel threatened, anxiety is a natural response. But what if there is a way to hold onto peace without ignoring the reality of your stress?
In Philippians 4:4-13, Paul writes from a prison cell—a place where anxiety would have been the most logical response. Yet, he speaks of a "peace that surpasses understanding." This isn't a suggestion to simply 'think positive.' It is an invitation to shift your focus. Paul mentions the word "gentleness" (ἐπιείκεια, epieikeia), which suggests a spirit of reasonableness or grace toward oneself and others. When we recognize that the Lord is near, our frantic need to control the outcome begins to lose its grip.
Paul admits that he has learned the secret of being content in any and every situation. He isn't claiming he never felt pressure; he is claiming that he found a source of strength outside of his own circumstances.
One thing you can do today: When the "what ifs" start to spiral, pause. Write down one thing you are worried about, and then intentionally offer it to God through a short prayer, acknowledging that He is present in that specific situation right now. You don't need to fix the problem in your head before you pray. Just bring the weight to Him.
You are not defined by your anxieties, but by the One who holds your future.
